Five Products: Audited, Standardized, and Unified Into One Platform

Knightscope had a vision for redefining the emergency communication market. To realize this, they partnered with Motivo to turn a collection of five different products into one versatile platform that is faster to deploy and easier for people to use.
Background

As a prominent developer of autonomous field hardware, Knightscope faced a common scaling hurdle: a stationary portfolio that had grown into five distinct, custom variants. This diversity led to high manufacturing costs, complex maintenance, and hardware that was often difficult to deploy without significant site infrastructure.

Motivo was engaged to consolidate these designs into a unified hardware platform. The goal was to modernize the industry by replacing rigid, legacy hardware with a flexible, easy-to-maintain architecture. By standardizing components, Motivo helped eliminate supplier bottlenecks while integrating the processing power required for advanced, real-time data analytics all while maintaining reliable, all-weather performance in the field.

Development Phases
Product Definition & Portfolio Audit

Conducted a comprehensive audit of the original nine existing product lines to identify redundancies and strategic gaps. This process allowed us to consolidate the portfolio by retiring underperforming variants and reimagining the remaining six into a single, high-efficiency modular platform.

Industrial Design & Visual Identity

Spearheaded a month-long design sprint to establish a cohesive family language before engineering commenced. Conceptual sketches were transformed into boardroom-ready visual assets, defining the aesthetic DNA. Detailed CAD was then refined for both component placement and manufacturability.

Integrated Architecture & Prototyping

With the design language set, engineering and software teams worked under one roof to detail and refine the system architecture. Motivo developed the system architecture across the K1-Capsule and K1-Tower variants, accommodating Base, Pro, and Max feature sets.

Alpha Realization

Focused on the physical realization of the K1-Capsule Max, including detailed mechanical and electrical design and the build of two Alpha prototypes.

Roadmap to Market

Supported the identification of critical regulatory requirements and defined the comprehensive testing protocols necessary for full market certification.

Tower Expansion

Utilized the core architecture to expand the scope, including the full K1-Tower series (7ft, 14ft, and 21ft variants) and the standalone K1-Capsule, ensuring a consistent look and feel across the hardware family.

Technical Innovation & Human-Centered UX

Motivo optimized the platform to ensure that advanced intelligence remained accessible and intuitive, regardless of where the unit is installed.

Modular Intelligence

Integrated high-performance edge-AI, modular cameras, and ruggedized routing into a standardized internal chassis.

Intelligent Interaction Logic

Developed a custom software state machine to manage hardware behaviors, including motion-triggered high-visibility lighting and multi-mode emergency indicators.

Accessibility & Audio UX

Prioritized ADA compatibility and two-way video communication. Integrated an Axis sound projector for live "talk-down" capabilities and automated safety warnings.

Optimized Performance

Engineered custom brackets and internal harnesses for commonality across all variants, utilizing UV-stable and thermally resilient materials for robust field operation.

Outcome

This collaborative effort accelerated the transition from initial concept to design validation prototypes in less than three months. By leveraging Motivo’s specialized engineering team, Knightscope achieved this aggressive timeline without the overhead of an internal hiring crunch.

Beyond the engineering execution, Motivo’s strategic consulting helped identify and eliminate design redundancies early in the process. This proactive approach prevented costly mid-development pivots and ensured that capital was focused exclusively on high-impact features, maximizing the project’s return on investment.

The resulting Alpha prototypes featuring the K1-Capsule and the full K1-Tower series provided Knightscope with polished "looks-like and works-like" assets. These high-fidelity prototypes allowed the team to immediately drive sales conversations and demonstrate their next-generation AI and edge intelligence capabilities to the market.
